Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1

It’s 1859 Nikolai Kirsanov asks his servant Piotr if his son has returned yet. They are waiting on the high road. Finally a tarantass pulled by three horses arrives and the young Arkady embraces his father as the horses rest.

Chapter 2

We meet Bazarov, the party figures out who will ride in which carriage. Father and son in the koliaska, Bazarov in the tarantass.

Chapter 3 - On the Road

Nikolai tells Arkady about life at home while they travel the road home to Marino.

Chapter 4 - Marino

Nikolai and Akrady arrive home, room is made for Bazarov. We meet Uncle Pavel at dinner.

Chapter 5 - Marino

Bazarov gets up early to collect frogs. At breakfast tea is served with lemon or cream, Arkady meets Fenichka. Bazarov introduces everyone to Nihism, Uncle Piotr hates it.

Chapter 6 - Marino Breakfast Chat

Bazarov drinks tea and continues his discussion with Piotr. Arkady tries to mediate, but it is clear they disagree on many levels.

Chapter 7 - Pavel Backstory

Pavel (Paul) was very handsome. He fell in love with a beautiful women who did not love him in return. He gave up on finding another love.

Chapter 8 - Marion - Fenitchka Backstory

Pavel has a long discussion with Fenitchka after asking for green tea. We learn how Fenitchka came to live at Marion.

Chapter 9 - Marion

Bazarov is struck by Fenitchka’s beauty, they laugh at Nikolai playing the cello.

Chapter 10 - Marion - Two Weeks Later

Nikolai overhears Bazarov saying the old men are past their prime, Arkady takes away Pushkin, leads to a heated discussion at dinner.

Chapter 11 - Marion - After Dinner

Everyone is upset and frustrated after dinner. The boys decided to take off.

Chapter 12 - Provincial Town

We meet Sitnikov, he suggested they visit Madame Kukshin

Chapter 13 - Provincial Town, Madame Kushkin’s Villa

They have a three champagne lunch, she's heading to Heidelberg to study with Bunsen.

Chapter 14 - Provincial Town, The Ball

A few days later at the ball, Arkady dances a mazurka with Madame Odintsov. Madame Kushkin and Sitnikov were there too, but no one paid them any attention.

Chapter 15 - Provincial Town, Madime Odintsov’s Hotel

The sons are in the hotel of Madime Odintsov, they chat, she invites them to come visit at her home, Nikolsköe.

Chapter 16 - Nikolsköe

The sons arrive at Nikolsköe, they meet Madime Odintsov’s sister Katia.

Chapter 17 - Nikolsköe, a fortnight later

The sons have spent a fortnight with Madime Odintsov’s daily schedule. Bazarov and Madime Odintsov have many long discussions

Chapter 18 - Nikolsköe, the next morning

Madime Odintsov asks Bazarov for a textbook, he proclaims his love.

Chapter 19 - Nikolsköe, later at dinner

Bazarov announces his intention to leave to visit his parents.

Chapter 20 - Bazarov Family Home

Bazarov arrives home. We meet his father the village doctor and his mother.

Chapter 21 - Leaving

Arkady has a chat with Bazarov’s father. They spend only a short time and take off.

Chapter 22 - Chilly stop at Nikolsköe on the way to Marino

On the road to Thedot's posting-house, they sons choose to stop by Nikolskoe. They were cooly greated, they traveled on to Marino. After about 10 days later Arkady finds letters he wants to take to Madame Odintsov.

Chapter 23 - Marino - Bazarov Kisses Fenichka

Bazarov sits with Fenichka in the garden, he asks for a rose for payment for his medical services. He asks for a rose, takes a kiss, uncle Paul see from a distance.

Chapter 24 - Marino - Paul challenges Bazarov

Paul confronts Bazarov and challenges him to a dual. Paul is shot in the leg, Bazarov leaves for Nikolskole.

Chapter 25 - Nikolsköe

Arkady and Katia chat in the garden, Bazarov arrives

Chapter 26 - Nikolsköe

Arkady proposes to Katia, has a falling out with Bazarov.

Chapter 27 - Bazarov Family Home

Bazarov returns home, his parents are excited. He does work, gets cut performing an autopsy. He falls ill quickly, sends for Madame Odintsov. She visits with a doctor, Bazarov dies.

Chapter 28 - Marino

Arkady marries Katia and Nikolai marries Fenitchka. Updates on everyone else.
