Carboniferous - In Europe, the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian periods are combined into the Carboniferous because of the massive quantity of coal bearing beds found in the UK, France & Germany. The name is derived from Latin literally meaning “coal-bearing.” Minor coal deposits can be found in older formations including the Silurian and Devonian but it was during the Pennsylvanian that significant accumulations are found.
