Mary & Elizabeth in Paris
1868
Mary Putnam was the first woman student accepted at the École de Médecine of the University of Paris. For two years she attend clinics, lectures and laboratory sessions. Elizabeth Garret Anderson attempted to enter the Sorbonne, but was rejected due to residency restrictions. Even with the support of the British Ambassador and the Empresses, Elizabeth couldn’t gain entry to the Sorbonne for another year [TCOTP, 73].

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson starts her classes in February. She passes her first exam in March, then many more follow,
1870
June, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson get’s her degree in Paris. Her thesis is on Migraines.

Mary Putnam graduates in July receiving a bronze medal for her thesis. She wrote several articles on medical developments and on French and American politics.

Bronisława, Marie Curie’s older sister arrives in Paris to start medical school. It will take her five years. She will graduate, get married and the funds from their practice will bring Marie to Paris to study in 1890.
